Job Description

General Summary: The Surgical Technologist is responsible for delivering care to surgical patients and contributing to the efficient function of the Surgery Department. This role includes providing instruction on the technical aspects of surgery to medical students, nurses, and other technicians. The Sterile Processing Tech ensures the cleanliness and proper care of surgical equipment, acting as the first line of defense against transferrable infections and faulty equipment.

Essential Job Duties

• Surgical Tech Responsibilities:
  • Select instrument sets and related equipment based on the proposed surgery and the surgeon’s preferences.
  • Prepare the surgical area, including scrubbing, gowning, and gloving self and team members.
  • Drape the patient and assist the surgeon as needed, following approved aseptic methods.
  • Handle instruments appropriately and ensure their proper functioning during procedures.
  • Maintain strict adherence to sterile technique, alerting the team to any breaches.
  • Count sponges and sharps with the Circulating Nurse at critical surgical stages.
  • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs to minimize delays during procedures.
  • Assist in cleaning and preparing the operating room for subsequent surgeries.
  • Serve as the first assistant to the surgeon when necessary.
  • Properly identify and preserve surgical specimens.
  • Communicate any changes in the surgical schedule to relevant staff.
  • Provide education and training to new personnel.
  • Restock departmental supplies according to established levels.
  • Report maintenance and servicing needs of surgical equipment.
  • Transport preoperative patients following established protocols.
  • Stay current on surgical technology through ongoing education, including journals and conferences.
  • Participate in departmental staff meetings to enhance communication and knowledge sharing.
  • Respect patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Follow the chain of command for reporting pertinent information.
  • Perform other assigned duties as required.
• Sterile Processing Tech Responsibilities:
  • Understand the functions and uses of surgical equipment.
  • Ensure all medical equipment is properly decontaminated and adhere to sterilization guidelines.
  • Maintain and organize sterile storage and inventory supplies.
  • Check equipment for defects and conduct cleaning and sterilization according to protocols.
  • Coordinate the stocking and inventory of crash carts.
  • Prepare and manage surgical instrument trays efficiently.
  • Operate and monitor sterilization equipment, including steam autoclaves and sonic washers.
  • Record sterilizer test results accurately.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualification and Education Requirements

• Completion of a Surgical Technologist training program or a minimum of one year of experience in OR scrub nursing (experience may be waived at the discretion of the supervisor).
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Certification as a Central Supply Technician is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Understanding of surgical procedures and ability to anticipate surgeon’s needs.
• Proficiency in handling instruments and supplies.
• Thorough knowledge of medical asepsis principles applied in the operating room.
• Ability to manage tissues, specimens, cultures, and smears appropriately.
• Familiarity with various surgical instruments and their setup.
• Capability to perform tedious tasks such as memorizing surgical instruments and maintaining inventory.
• Tolerance for blood and body tissue exposure.
• Training in cleaning procedures and safety protocols will be necessary.

Shift Information

Monday - Friday; 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM; hours may vary based on case load. Flexibility for additional hours and weekend shifts may be required.
