Surgical Technologist / Sterile Processing Technician

Shift: Monday - Friday; 7:00am - 3:30pm; hours may vary depending on case load

Job Summary

The Surgical Technologist is responsible for delivering care to surgical patients and contributing to the efficient operation of the Surgery Department. This role involves providing technical instruction in surgical practices to medical students, nurses, and other healthcare personnel. The Sterile Processing Technician is tasked with maintaining the cleanliness and proper care of surgical equipment, ensuring a safe and sterile environment within the operating room.

Essential Job Duties

Surgical Technologist Responsibilities:

• Prepare and pick instrument sets based on the type of surgery, possible complications, and surgeon preferences.
• Ensure the operating room is equipped with necessary tools and instruments.
• Assist in the scrubbing, gowning, and gloving of surgical team members.
• Drape patients appropriately according to established protocols.
• Handle surgical instruments properly and ensure their functionality.
• Monitor and maintain sterile techniques and promptly report any breaches in protocol.
• Count sponges and sharps in collaboration with the Circulating Nurse before and after surgeries.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgeon to minimize delays during procedures.
• Assist with room and equipment preparation for subsequent surgeries.
• Act as first assistant to the surgeon as necessary, including retraction of tissue and suturing.
• Recognize and preserve specimens received during surgery.
• Communicate progress and changes in the operating room to the OR Supervisor.
• Restock supplies and report any maintenance requirements for surgical equipment.
• Participate in the training and orientation of new personnel.
• Attend departmental meetings to facilitate communication and education regarding new policies and procedures.

Sterile Processing Technician Responsibilities:

• Maintain thorough knowledge of the functionality and use of surgical equipment.
• Follow sterilization protocols to ensure that all medical equipment is adequately decontaminated before use.
• Monitor supply levels in sterile storage areas to ensure availability of necessary tools.
• Inspect equipment for defects and perform routine maintenance.
• Utilize autoclaves and sterilization tools according to established guidelines.
• Organize and oversee the inventory of surgical instrument trays.
• Document sterilizer test results and adhere to safety protocols.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

• Successful completion of a Surgical Technologist training program or a minimum of one year of experience in OR scrub nursing (may be waived at the discretion of the OR Supervisor).
• Current BLS certification.
• Certification as a Central Supply Technician is a plus.
• Thorough knowledge of surgical procedures to anticipate surgeon's needs.
• Familiarity with the proper handling of instruments and supplies in the operating room.
• Understanding of medical asepsis related to surgical practices.
• Ability to work with meticulous tasks and maintain accurate inventory of surgical supplies.
• Capability to tolerate exposure to blood and other bodily tissues.
• Completion of proper training in cleaning procedures and safety protocols is required.

Willingness to expand knowledge of surgical technology through professional development, including in-service training and conferences as approved.
